2019 Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir
See below for vintage summary, winemaking, and wine stats
Vintage Summary
Although this is an appellation wine, this Pinot Noir comes from a single vineyard in the heart of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Located at about 1000 ft. in elevation, this southeastern facing 2 acre block was planted in 1997, and has been farmed by us since 2016. It is dry- farmed, no-till, and organic, and is located in a canyon in the Glenwood area surrounded by second growth redwoods, bay trees, and coast live oaks. It is steep, about 30% slopes, and grown on clay loam soils weathered from Purisima Mudstone. The 2019 growing season gave us above average winter rainfall in most the Santa Cruz Mountains, with the Glenwood vineyard seeing 63 inches. Spring was long and warm lending to extra vigorous early growth followed by good flowering conditions in early June. After a few heat waves in early summer, conditions shifted to classic mild Santa Cruz Mountains in the fall. Cold nights and sunny warm days, slack winds. The grapes were harvested on September 21st, our biggest yield ever at 4 tons form this 2 acre block.
Winemaking
The grapes were picked by hand, sorted in the field. At the winery the grapes were destemmed into a redwood fermenter. Pumped over once daily, pressed after a 14 day fermentation. Elevage in old (10 years) barriques for 18 months. Racked to stainless a month before bottling. Unfined, unfiltered. Bottled March 5th, 2021. 250 cases produced.
